Your home’s plumbing system relies on proper water pressure to operate safely and efficiently. One of the most important components controlling that pressure is the pressure regulating valve (PRV), typically located on the main waterline where water enters your home.

A PRV reduces the incoming municipal water pressure to a safe level for your home’s plumbing system. When a PRV fails, excessive or inconsistent water pressure can place unnecessary stress on pipes, faucets, toilets, water heaters and appliances. Over time, this can lead to leaks, damaged fixtures, premature appliance failure and costly plumbing repairs.

At Godek Plumbing & Gas, we regularly discover failed or improperly functioning PRVs during service calls and plumbing inspections. In fact, we find a failed PRV in approximately ONE of every THREE homes we put a test gauge on! Many homeowners don’t realize there is a problem because a failing PRV can develop gradually without obvious warning signs.

In most cases, failed PRV's are a silent killer and most people are totally unaware of their failure. This can put major and unnecessary stress on your piping system and fixtures, which over time leads to costly damage and repairs. Common, more noticeable signs can include high pressure at faucets, banging or noisy pipes, dripping fixtures, leaking appliances or inconsistent water flow. A PRV may fail by becoming stuck open, allowing excessive pressure into the home, or it may restrict water flow and cause low pressure throughout the plumbing system.

When we suspect a PRV issue, our technicians begin by testing incoming water pressure with professional pressure-testing gauges. We check the static pressure and, when necessary, pressure while water is flowing. This allows us to determine whether the PRV is functioning correctly and identify any related plumbing concerns. If the PRV has failed, we explain our findings to the homeowner and recommend the appropriate repair or replacement. A PRV will usually have a lifespan of 10-20 years which is dependent on incoming water quality. Replacing a PRV typically involves shutting off the main water supply, removing the failed valve, installing a properly sized replacement, and ensuring all connections are secure and leak-free.

Professional installation is important because the new valve must be correctly sized, installed, and adjusted for the home. At Godek Plumbing & Gas, we take the time to inspect the surrounding plumbing, verify the installation, adjust the water pressure as needed, and test the system before completing the repair. A properly functioning PRV is an important part of protecting your home’s plumbing system. Addressing a failing valve early can help reduce stress on pipes and fixtures, protect appliances, and prevent avoidable water damage and repairs.

If you’re experiencing high, low, or inconsistent water pressure, our team can help! Our professional technicians can test your water pressure, determine whether your PRV is functioning properly, and provide a reliable repair or replacement when needed.

Don't wait for a failed pressure regulating valve to leave you with costly repairs. Give us a call and our team will help protect your home the way we do best!

Hard Water and the Hidden Stress It Places on Your Plumbing

Hard water leaves scale in pipes and appliances. Godek Plumbing & Gas explains how mineral buildup affects your plumbing and how filtration helps.

If you live in Oceanside or the surrounding area, chances are you have noticed signs of hard water in your home. Stains on glassware, buildup in kettles, and corrosion on plumbing fixtures are all common indicators that your water contains elevated mineral levels and may benefit from filtration.

Hard water contains high concentrations of dissolved minerals, primarily calcium and magnesium, that are picked up as water travels through soil and rock formations. While these minerals are not typically harmful to human health, they can create long term challenges for residential plumbing systems and the appliances that rely on them every day.

One of the most common effects of hard water is mineral buildup known as scale. As water flows through pipes and is heated or evaporates, dissolved minerals crystallize and attach to nearby surfaces. Over time, these deposits accumulate inside plumbing lines and gradually narrow the internal diameter of pipes. This restriction reduces water flow and increases pressure within the system. When pressure rises inside plumbing lines, pipes, valves, and fittings must work harder than intended. That extra strain can accelerate wear on components and increase the likelihood of leaks or pipe failure as systems age.

Water heaters are particularly vulnerable to hard water conditions. When water is heated, calcium and magnesium separate from the water more rapidly and settle onto heating elements and the interior surfaces of the tank. As these deposits accumulate, they form a layer that acts as insulation between the heating element and the water. This forces the system to consume more energy in order to heat the same volume of water. Over time, the heater becomes less efficient and may struggle to maintain consistent hot water temperatures. In more severe cases, heavy scale buildup can lead to overheating, unusual noises inside the tank, or premature component failure.

Hard water also affects everyday fixtures and appliances throughout the home. Faucets and showerheads can develop mineral deposits that clog small openings and restrict water flow. Showerheads may begin to spray unevenly, while faucets can lose pressure or develop visible white residue. Appliances such as dishwashers and washing machines are also impacted. Hard water can prevent detergents from dissolving and rinsing properly, leaving behind spots on dishes or residue on clothing. Over time, this buildup reduces efficiency and may shorten the lifespan of appliances that depend on clean water flow.

Another common issue occurs when minerals in hard water react with soaps and detergents. Calcium and magnesium bind with soap to form a substance known as soap scum. This sticky residue accumulates in sinks, drains, and shower surfaces and can contribute to clogged drains and slower water flow. Because soap becomes less effective in hard water, many homeowners unknowingly use larger quantities of cleaning products, which can further add to buildup within plumbing systems.

Fortunately, effective solutions are available. Water softener systems remove calcium and magnesium through a process called ion exchange, replacing these minerals with ones that do not create scale buildup. By reducing hardness levels, these systems help protect pipes, improve appliance efficiency, and extend the lifespan of plumbing infrastructure throughout the home.

At Godek Plumbing and Gas, our team specializes in diagnosing water hardness issues and recommending the right treatment solutions for each household. We provide professional water testing, system installation, and maintenance services designed to protect plumbing systems from mineral related damage.

Hard water may seem like a minor inconvenience at first, but over time it can quietly place significant stress on a home’s plumbing system. With the right treatment system in place, homeowners can protect their pipes, improve efficiency, and enjoy cleaner water throughout their home.

Why Perimeter Drainage Matters on Vancouver Island

Learn why perimeter drainage matters on Vancouver Island and how the Godek Plumbing & Gas excavation team handles drainage, sewer and septic work.

At Godek Plumbing & Gas, we’ve earned a reputation in the community for quality workmanship and a hands-on approach to every project. As we’ve grown, our company has continued its dedication to helping people through a highly specialized excavation division focused on underground infrastructure and utility systems.

The excavation division plays a critical role in maintaining and repairing essential underground services that homeowners and businesses rely on every day. From perimeter drainage systems and waterline services to new utility installations and sewer repairs, our crew has invested heavily in the equipment, training, and expertise required to tackle complex underground projects safely and efficiently. Our operators and installers work with precision to minimize disruption to surrounding properties and landscapes while delivering reliable results. Whether the job involves a small residential drainage repair or a large scale septic project, we have the equipment and experience to handle our clients' excavation and drainage needs.

Working and living in one of the wettest places on earth, one of our primary areas of focus is perimeter drainage system repair and maintenance. Vancouver Island gets an average of 180 days of rain annually, with precipitation exceeding 1300mm per year! Given these conditions, the value of a properly functioning perimeter drainage system cannot be overstated. These systems use underground pipes to carry rainwater and groundwater away from the foundation of your home, protecting the basement and crawlspace from flooding and foundation erosion.

Our local team understands the importance of reliable drainage infrastructure and the risks that come with system failure. Having seen many disastrous floods due to failed or damaged perimeter systems, our focus is to identify, repair, and replace failing drainage systems before they become major problems. We use modern camera and locating systems to detect and pinpoint failed areas of drainage and provide a permanent solution before minor problems become major repairs. Regular inspection and maintenance can identify and address these problems before they turn into more costly projects.

Beyond the proper repair of any system, we also believe that respectful clean-up is just as important. When we go into an excavation project, we know that one of the largest stress-factors for most of our clients is the dismantlement of their beautiful green grass, their lovely flower beds, and incredible rock walls. We take tremendous pride in minimizing our footprint during our excavation work using proper machinery and techniques, leaving homeowners’ yards and driveways in the best possible shape when our work is complete. We do this by utilizing a team of professionals who provide pressure washing, concrete repair, soil replacement, landscaping and more. All under one quote, we work to leave your property looking as close to, or even better than, how we found it.

As infrastructure ages and demand for dependable underground utility maintenance continues to grow, so does our team. With skill, knowledge, and compassion, we continue to provide excavation and repair solutions that protect properties, improve system performance, and support the long-term needs of our clients and communities. With the arrival of summer, now is the time to tackle those projects and ensure proper system performance before the next rainy season arrives.
